速度更快的网站能够让用户更快乐，Google内部的研究发现，如果一个网站响应缓慢，网民停留的时间也就更短。另外，快速的网站不仅仅提高用户体验，最近的数据显示，提高速度同时可以降低运营成本。和Google一样，许多用户对于网站速度很看重，这是Google在排名中引入网速的原因。
据说，网站响应速度的权重低于网页相关性，因此搜索排序不会立刻发生巨变。但是这一新制度将导致百分之一的搜索结果排序发生变化。
Google的搜索排名算法，可谓互联网世界最大的机密。美国专业网站“Search Engine Land”曾透露，Google在决定网页排序时要考虑两百多个要素。
对于网站运营方来说，目前已经有Google、雅虎和第三方提供的多种网速衡量工具。比如作为火狐浏览器插件使用的Pagespeed。Google工程师表示，Google主要有两种办法测量网站响应速度，一个是观察对方对于Google“爬虫”的反应，另外一个是通过客户端工具栏衡量速度。
