在Google最近更新的关于Google Docs升级的博客中透露了实施HTML5的最终时间：5月3日。也就是说，在实施当天Google会暂时取消对Google Docs(不包括Gmail和Calendar)离线功能的支持，各位Docs的忠实用户要提早做好准备。在这一转变完成之后，一个“更强大的基于HTML5的”离线选项将会替代原有的Gears选项。
究其原因，除了保持浏览器的简洁性外，另一个值得一提就是Google Gears的兼容性问题。就目前而言，如果你想使用Google Docs，Calendar以及Gmail的离线功能，唯一的选择就是安装Google Gears的浏览器插件。不幸的是，并非所有的浏览器都能够兼容这个插件，比如Mac的Snow Leopard操作系统和Safari 4的组合就与Gears相克，至于iPhone或者iPad更是想都不用想。
用HTML5代替Gears的好处显而易见：作为下一代的网络超文本标记语言，HTML5是一种网络标准，而非插件。它不仅能实现Gears的功能，而且再也不用担心兼容性的问题。对于Google而言，则不用担心自己步Adobe的后尘，Docs像Flash那样被Apple拒之门外。
